Hsi Lai Temple, near Los
Angeles, California, USA, is said to be the largest Buddhist temple in the West.
(As a tour guide there, I always hedged with "is said to be," or
something like it--just to be on the safe side.)
At any rate, it is a major
presence in the Chinese-speaking Buddhist community, attracting tens of
thousands at Chinese New Year alone.
A "tour" of the Temple
is given in the Ascent
of Hsi Lai Temple, so I won't add anything further
here. You can learn more about Hsi Lai, founding Master
Hsing Yun, and mother organization, Fo
Guang Shan, by exploring the Hsi
Lai homepage.
Hsi Lai offers many
opportunities for non-Chinese-speakers to delve into Buddhism. For one
great example, read about my great friend and fellow-seeker Prince
Roy's experience as a monk for-a-week in Buddhist
Boot Camp; there's also a follow-up.
Finally here are pictures of indoor
and outdoor
New Years parties over at one of my sister sites.
If you need a particular
picture of the Temple, or have questions about it, please don't hesitate to
write to me, using the mail link below.
