AKI MEGURIHISTORYTOKAIDOYAMATOSHIKOKU

Words-and-Pictures: Engakuji

(as seen on September 8th, 2001, on the Old Tokaido stage of the Aki Meguri)

Note: Engakuji is located in Kamakura in Kanagawa Prefecture.  Kamakura is a sidetrip off of the Old Tokaido between Kanagawa (now Yokohama) and Hodogaya, Stations 3 and 4 (from Tokyo.)  You can read about my visit to Engakuji in my Logbook for that day.  You may also choose to start reading about my Tokaido journey at the beginning, or start at the top of my Aki Meguri pages.

The great main gate
The hondo, where I stood...

...before the Buddha and...
...said my prayers.  (Tom took the picture; he and Yuka were amused by the looks I got as I chanted in bad Japanese.)

This monk helped us find the stamp office.
Three shots...

...of Engakuji's...
...magnificent atmosphere.

There's an excellent homepage on Engakuji here.
